Phantombuster MCP review
Phantombuster is a great lead generation tool. It offers many ready-made automations called Phantoms to do things like sending connection requests or following people on LinkedIn.
Those Phantoms are typically only building blocks in larger automations. Therefore, a key challenge to use Phantombuster at scale is orchestration.
- The old-style way to handle it was with a Google Sheets template. I built a few Phantombuster automation templates over the years.
- The Phantombuster team partially solved the problem by offering more advanced Phantoms like the LinkedIn outreach, which handles multiple phantoms under the hook. This option limits you to whatever the Phantombuster team builds and maintains. You cannot build your own workflow.
- The latest kid on the block is Phantombuster MCP (Model Context Protocol). This allows you to orchestrate Phantombuster workflows from your AI tool of choice (Claude, Cursor…)
How to use Phantombuster MCP
Setup and authentication
Setting up Phantombuster MCP is super simple. It relies on OAuth login, so it will ask you to perform the authentication in a browser. There is no API key or other dev dark magic to deal with.
This make is easyer to use than the PhantomBuster REST API. And in combination with Claude, you can set up some automation in plain English without any programming knowledge.
Launching and stopping Phantom
The MCP can easily launch and stop a Phantom.
You can also change the settings of a Phantom.
Manage the lead list
This might be where most of the value is.
Phantombuster released a lead list feature a few years back. It aggregates all LinkedIn profiles discovered by any Phantom.
You can do a lot of cool stuff with it. For example, you can easily turn a list of website into a list of leads:
The MCP lets you work with the lead list at scale: search leads with filters, save single or batch lead objects, delete leads by ID, and create or update lists with filters.
Furthermore, the MCP comes with a filter help tool. When you ask your LLM to build a list with conditional filters, it can call this tool first, discover the exact field names and comparators available, and then construct a query that actually runs, instead of letting your LLM hallucinate some filters.
Pros and cons
Pros
- OAuth authentication means no API keys sitting in
.envfiles or ops docs. - Every tool call carries a user identity, so multi-user agents get a real audit trail.s.
- Works with every major MCP-capable assistant and sixteen agent frameworks via Composio.
- The filter help tool reduces hallucinated queries when the assistant constructs list filters.
Cons
- The MCP surface is a curated subset of the REST API, not the whole thing.
- No live console streaming during long Phantom runs; that endpoint stays REST-only.
- No webhook event delivery
- The hosted server evolves without version pinning, so a tool signature could shift under you.
- The underlying LinkedIn automation still runs through browser session cookies, so LinkedIn account risk carries over to anything you drive from the chat.
Use cases
- Run outbound from your LLM chat. Set up and launch a full outreach sequence from Claude.
- List hygiene and enrichment. Have the assistant search your org storage for stale leads, delete duplicates in batch, and re-enrich leads with an email finder Phantom.
- Rotate LinkedIn cookies to save slots. Phantom slots are typically the main constraint in your subscription. If you run a Phantom like Sales Nav Profile Viewer only once per week, you can use the MCP to rotate the LinkedIn credential. I made a skill for exactly that.
Final thoughts
Phantombuster MCP is great for orchestrating multiple Phantoms and building complex outreach workflows. It is definitely a step in the right direction by the Phantombuster team.
However, Phantombuster pricing is not built for AI workflows. The limit on Phantom slots is too constraining to build complex workflows. A workaround would be to use the MCP to optimise your slot use:
- delete Phantoms on the go once you are done using them
- rotate cookies for Phantom, which are account-specific, like the Connection Auto Accept.
FAQs
Do I need a paid Phantombuster plan to use the MCP server?
You need an active Phantombuster subscription, because MCP calls consume the same execution time, Phantom slots, and email credits as launches from the app. The MCP server itself doesn’t cost extra, and the fourteen-day free trial covers it. If you plan some complex workflow, the Phantom slots are usually the first subscription limit you will hit. You can choose to go for 2 Starter plans instead of a Pro plan if 10 Phantom slots are enough (you can create 2 Phantom connectors for your AI agent to shift between subscriptions).
Which AI clients work with Phantombuster MCP?
The hosted server works with Claude web, Claude Code CLI, ChatGPT (via custom connectors), Cursor, Gemini CLI, and Codex CLI. Through Composio, it also plugs into LangChain, CrewAI, LlamaIndex, Mastra, Pydantic AI, Google ADK, the Vercel AI SDK, and OpenAI’s Agents SDK, among others.
How do I switch between Phantombuster workspaces?
You pick a workspace at connect time. To switch, disconnect the MCP connector in your AI client and reconnect; the OAuth flow prompts you to select a workspace again.
Should I use the MCP server or the REST API?
If you don’t know how to code, MCP will be easier to use. Use REST for endpoints not supported by the MCP: scheduled headless jobs, live container streaming, webhook delivery, or the utility endpoints (AI completions, hCaptcha, reCAPTCHA, SERP). Many teams end up using both.
Is Phantombuster MCP safe to use with LinkedIn?
The MCP layer is an authentication and control surface, not a change to how the underlying Phantoms interact with LinkedIn. LinkedIn Phantoms still automate LinkedIn on your behalf, so you need ot be reasonable with the scale of your automation.
Pro tip: Use Phantombuster only for activity requiring logging in. I recommend using Apify for profile scraping. See my detailed article about Apify vs Phantombuster for more details on the topic
What Claude skill can I use? I started a GitHub repo with a few [skills for Phantombuster MCP]. PR are welcome if you have other skills to add.
